5 Tips For Setting Up A Meditation Space

by Irene Bradley

Adding a meditation practice to your life has many benefits. In fact, scientific studies have shown that meditation can increase mental focus and clarity, while reducing stress and anxiety. Getting into meditation is simple, but it helps to have a dedicated place to do so. Here are five tips for setting up a soothing meditation space in your home:

Be Creative in Identifying a Space

When looking around your home for the perfect meditation space, it pays to think outside of the box. This is especially true if you live in a small space or if your home is bustling with family members and noise. A meditation space doesn't have to be large, just calm and quiet. An unused corner of the bedroom, floor space inside a walk-in closet, or even the bathroom can all work as a meditation space.

Get Comfy

Your meditation area should first be clean and clear of clutter. Now you can add whatever will make sitting for extended periods comfortable for you. A simple floor cushion may be all you need, but some meditation and natural health care practitioners find it helpful to sit in a chair (especially if you have back or knee issues), or to cover themselves with a cozy blanket. Have whatever you need to be comfortable already arranged and you will be more likely to actually meditate regularly.

Light Some Incense

Incense and meditation go hand-in-hand. Many people find both the scent and the act of lighting incense to be relaxing and meditative. It also adds to the feeling of ceremony or ritual. Soon your brain will begin to associate lighting incense with meditation, so when you light the incense it will be easier to relax into a meditative mindset.

Choose an Object to Focus On

While some choose to meditate with their eyes closed, many people find it helpful to focus on a particular object. The object should be pleasing and calming to look at. A statue of Buddha, a photo of a loved one, a flower in a vase, or a candle votive floating in water are popular objects for meditation. You may wish to experiment by changing out the objects.

Declare Your Space Sacred

Once you have your meditation area set up, be sure to let your family know it is sacred. When you are meditating they should consider the space and time sacred and wait until you're done to talk to you. If you want to, you can invite your partner or children to enjoy the meditation space as well, whenever they need a little calm in their life.

By following these tips, you will be able to enjoy the many benefits of meditation any time you feel like it.
